Intel, once the top of the world in processors, announced another series of layoffs, with about 15% due to be gone by the end of the year. At their quarterly announcements, Intel noted that they were no longer in the top 10 of chip manufacturers in the world by market capitalization. AMD, the big competitor in PC CPUs, has been gaining ground, and while it’s got a way to go, it’s reporting it’s up over 17% this year. As an indicator, gamers show where the market is shifting. Users of the Steam gaming platform are reported to be still preferring Intel, with a balance of Intel around 60% and AMD around 40%.
Intel said Thursday it has mostly completed plans it announced last quarter to cut 15% of its workforce, as the struggling chipmaker attempts a turnaround.
