My internet speed is nothing to sneeze at, running 1Gig up, and 1Gig down. I can upgrade to 2Gig, but that’s nothing compared to what was just announced in Japan. The researchers at their National Institute of Information and Communications Technology worked up a new world record for speed, running at just over 1 Petabit over 1000 miles. To frame this properly, think about megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte at 1000 gigabytes, and petabyte at 1000 terabytes. These all work the same, but jut in terms of speed instead of storage. Yes, 100,000 times faster than my home internet speed and faster than your hard drive can handle, at probably around 3 to 6 Gigabit. It’s not likely to be there for home usage, but it will likely connect datacenters around Japan, and later the world.
Japanese researchers have transmitted long-distance data at faster than 350,000 times the average US broadband internet speed.
