Linux is gaining some serious ground. There’s some specifics to this, but Linux has been rising as people seem to be looking for prospects other than Windows 11. The latest is that over 5% of US users on the internet are using Linux. This is the first time Linux has moved about the 5% mark, as well as the first time it beat out the Unknown category. Apple’s control in the US seems to be gaining a bit for now as well, with a 3% overall move since November. Is this a done deal for Microsoft? No, as the king of operating systems is still on top since StatCounter started keeping track. Are they watching Apple and Linux? Likely, but will we reach a point where Microsoft pivots back to what users are asking for? That’s the bigger question.
The open-source favorite has scored record adoption among US desktop users, following a just over 5% dip in Windows popularity since December 2024.
