We have this idea of Mars as this far-off place, without meteorites coming our way. Well, when big impacts hit Mars, there’s the chance that those impacts will strew material across our solar system. Some of those pieces do wind up on Earth. This past week, someone put up one of these chunks of the Red Planet for sale and garnered $5.3 million. Since it’s just over 54 pounds, that works out to be one of the most expensive sets of minerals one could sell off. That’s some serious bragging rights for some collector, who will now own more than 1/20th of the material collected from our nearest likely inhabitable neighbor.
The 54-lb. meteorite was found in the Sahara in 2023.
