OpenAI, the folks behind ChatGPT, came under lawsuit this week, in the aftermath of a teenage boy making the “ultimate decision”, after allegedly consulting with the AI platform with a number of very concerning questions. As the story unfolds, it seems ChatGPT 4o was consulted by this young man for mental health struggles he was going through, and the responses went in that dark direction, assisting him with ideas, and even offering to help write a note for his parents. A normal person would have seen alarm bells, according to this lawsuit, and tried to stop it, rather than explore or encourage it. The presented information is chilling. This pattern of discussion, led in April to that final act. OpenAI reports they are already tweaking code, seeking to ensure that this never happens again.
The lawsuit marks the first time parents have directly accused the company behind the chatbot of wrongful death.
