WiFi 7 was made official, just under a year ago.  OK, technically, that was a ratification, a finalization, and we’ve seen hardware for far longer.  WiFi 8’s first draft is doing something we hadn’t seen yet, however.  For the life of WiFi, it’s been about speed first, and then expanding range.  The new specs are far more about driving reliability at the edge of your range, increasing the number of folks sharing the WiFi space, and compatibility around other standards also established, like Bluetooth, and NFC.  We will likely not see products in the WiFi 8 space for a while, so there’s no reason to wait.  I will note that being aware that the standard continues to move forward for all of us is always a good thing.

The first devices are still a few years away, but the first draft of the standard tells us what to expect.
