An announcement from Amazon this week rattled some folks, over a layoff. Initially it was rumored to be 30,000, but the official number was 14,000 employees being given 90 days notice, as well as options to find new positions, and a series of severance packages, healthcare, and other assistance. Yes, ynitially these sound like large numbers, but with over 1 1/2 million employees, 350,000 being corporate, and those impacted are corporate, it’s a big number, but it’s not your delivery driver. This represents 4% of the office workers, and yes, it’s rough going into the holidays, and I feel for all of them. It does, however, represent an indicator of Amazon’s recent claims of more investment in AI, and bolsters their statements that AI will take jobs away. This is an indicator to everyone, not just Amazon workers.
In a memo shared on Amazon’s website, the company said 14,000 corporate jobs are being cut.
