General Motors CEO Mary Barra was recently interviewed, and announced that GM would be dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from their entire lineup, not just the EVs so far. This represents the first non-EV company to commit to an abandonment of the existing infrastructure that has become an almost mandatory investment for in-car systems. Only Tesla and Rivian have been so bold as to buck the trend, but their own systems are quite different. This will be part of a new platform on GM vehicles starting in 2028, but it begs the question as to what the replacement will be. Most systems that I’ve seen from OEM have been lackluster, and don’t even touch the capabilities of CarPlay and Android Auto, and insist you pay for their own maps, their own add-ons, and more. GM better be ready to super impress people on this front, otherwise many people will wonder if there are better car options out there.
