This isn’t Luddites, but rather, some big names. Richard Branson, Steve Wozniak, and a host of folks have signed on to the idea of a pause in the development of superintelligence. Of the 3000 or so big names, and 21,000 overall who have signed on already, some are AI pioneers, or leading AI researchers, and others are big names in the political world, and so forth. This is all due to the concern that we are moving in a direction that is too fast, with no controls, and no regard for longer term potential impacts. Some of the goals by AI companies are to build superintelligence, and yet they seem to disregard the potential impact on everything from civil liberties, privacy, dignity, and even national or earthly security. Some of the AI entrepreneurs seemingly have dreams that would rival those who built the Tower of Babel, and that should scare all of us.
