Russia already has the idea of mandatory apps on their smartphones, and now India is giving all smartphone companies 90 days to install a government mandated cyber security app that can’t be deleted. The requirements are allegedly meant to provide security for the users, preventing cyber-crime and fraud, and inform about government initiatives. It does also require tracking functionality, and likely a host of other things they aren’t talking about. Imagine having to install an app on your phone that gives access to your every location and more. Don’t think that will never happen here, and as you might think, it’ll be all about helping you. I’m reminded of the famous line from many years ago… “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.'”. One bit of good news… Apple said they have zero intentions to comply. India then said, OK, no worries. All in the span of a week.

The Department of Communications in India is giving smartphone companies 90 days to begin preinstalling the Sanchar Saathi government app on all new devices that are sold.
