Some ideas around social media do need some review. Now, before I continue, this was a proposal, not an actual implementation of policy or law. Apparently the US Customs and Border Patrol is floating the idea of background checks for visitors that span far more than you’d imagine. The idea is to examine online presence, including the social media postings and profiles going back 5 years, with all info accessible. Further, the idea includes phone numbers and emails for the past 5-10 years, and info about your family members. It’s posed as a way to prevent the wrong people from coming here, but at a certain point, this level of intrusion may be just a bit too far. Again, they are opening it up for discussion, but my response is simply a resounding “No” as it steps into one more step towards invading the First Amendment rights of actual citizens, rather than visitors.
Tourists from Europe and other regions could be asked to provide a five-year social media history before given entry to the United States.
