Space is going to have to wait for the Artemis II crew, and NASA is also changing things up for Artemis III. Some of this has to do with the pushback from the launch pad of the spacecraft for Artemis II, which failed some pre-launch testing of fueling and engines. The next window for Artemis II is in April, and some of the folks decided to play it safe with the Artemis III which was going to have far more firsts than we’ve seen in the past, so they changed that up. The Artermis III mission will go to the moon as well, but not actually land. On that trip, they’ll dock up with some of the lander hardware which will be preset into orbit with some of the additional missions in the span between these two missions. Clearly NASA is still venturing forward, but with a plan for safety ahead of progress. The previous efforts of Apollo were part of the declared space race from back 50 years ago.
As an astronaut, you have to prepare for all kinds of eventualities, whether it’s staying in orbit for nine months longer than expected due to problems with your spacecraft, or cutting short a space station mission due to a health emergency.
