In Utah, a 40,000-acre data center is being pushed by Kevin O’Leary, aka Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank. For size comparison, it’s about half the size of Las Vegas, Nevada. This plan is still in the early stages, being presented to a local county commission, but it showed something that many people are concerned about. It seems that the power demand will be provided locally in this project just north of Salt Lake City, and yet it would soon generate and consume more power than the entire state of Utah. How much in numbers? The first phase would be 3 gigawatts of power, later rolling up to 9, while Utah currently sits at 4. This pales in comparison to news that China built 400 gigawatts of new power in the last 2 years, mostly for their own AI data centers.
