In 1997, which in Internet years, is basically an eternity, a search engine was introduced called AskJeeves. It was the first natural language search engine, meaning it operated much like Google was a few years back, all before AI came along. This week, it was shuttered. It was older than Google, and yet it still lost the race. Back then, it was amazing, but it does reflect that being first doesn’t always been being best, or even staying best. It was renamed to Ask.com in recent years, but for some reason they didn’t take advantage of the AI world when they could have, and apparently suffered from a loss to the others who did.
