Picture the largest building that you can think of. I drove by the Pentagon 2 years ago, and it was huge at 6.6M SF. The largest one in the world right now is in China at 18M SF. So, to top this, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Tesla, have decided to build Terafab, a semiconductor megafactory. Go big or go home seems to be the theme here. This massive building will be 100M SF and employ about 3000 people about an hour’s drive northwest of Houston. The long-term plans are to exceed current annual worldwide production of microchips, but with a focus on their own internal needs. This follows another site in the Austin area called GigaTexas that will do prototyping.
It would beat out China’s New Century Global Center, which spans 18.9 million square feet and comes with an indoor beach and ski slope inside.
