Andrew Ng helped start the early AI platform of Google Brain, and the learning platform Coursera. He’s been in the AI field since before it became a household term. This past week, he responded to much of the recent naysayers of an AI apocalypse, calling it science fiction. This actually has been his stance for a long time, and considers it some level of hype to encourage legislation to prevent new entrants into the field. This isn’t a new thought, as major players have often sought to constrain competition through legislation. However the AI future plays out, though I lean more towards his optimism, it’s something we shouldn’t worry about, as this is being played on a chess field, and most of us can’t even play checkers in this arena.

Andrew Ng says AI extinction warnings are science fiction and a PR wave meant to shape regulation. He told a US Senate forum the same thing in 2023.
