At the same time that China has been complaining about US bans on drones and other tech from them over national security concerns, China has announced new border control rules. Their new rules could ban citizens from leaving their country if they violate technology export or import regulations, or threaten “national interests”. That last part is rather vague but tends to be the case in many authoritarian countries, so it’s not surprising. The claim is that it won’t impact most people. Still, for a country that is so adamant that the US is wrong on the security front, the contrast is unmistakable. I’m personally supportive of the general guidelines that the US has for citizens here, but they are well backed up with specifics, instructions, helplines, and training to keep our information safe.
