Sam Altman, CEO over at OpenAI, said this past week that OpenAI will start slowing AI development. According to Altman, they are also now wiring “explicit safety cases” in the hopes of building a safer platform. He has said that there is no intention to stop, but only “pacing” and adjusting the rate of progress. In his comments, he noted that he was looking to stall two potential worries, that of losing control of the future to AI, and preventing “concentration of power,” explained as the idea of one person or company using AI to impose a specific worldview on everyone. It’s still an AI CEO claiming that he is out to do good, but the track record of many releases across many platforms make the potential for this to all be good words, with no actions.

Sam Altman says OpenAI will slow AI down without waiting for Congress. Pacing is not stopping, he wrote, and named two ways AI could go very badly.
