The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act passed it’s first hurdle this past week in the House, and is moving towards the Senate. Sure, we have the ability to listen to FM, satellite radio, and MP3s in most of our cars now, so why stick with AM? Simply put, there are markets which are already saturated by FM stations, like New York and Los Angeles, where the only way to keep in touch with listeners is AM radio. Some manufacturers have already made moves to remove AM, including many in the EV space, because of the problems of shielding the radios from the electric motors. At the same time, AM has long been the location for emergency broadcasts to cover large areas, as well as non-high fidelity items such as news, sports, and even talk radio. I’m happy to know that this previous vote was bi-partisan, and the Senate already has had a similar vote recently that indicates support as well.
