France hit our radar twice this week in tech news. One item was where French police will be able to turn on microphones and cameras on peoples cell phones via remote. It only applies to people who may be committing crimes facing more than 5 years in jail which may be a small amount of people. The other item was far more scary, where President Macron discussed the idea of banning access to social media in areas where protests were happening. France has been facing some demonstrations recently, and this is a scary proposal coming from what many would consider a more-free country than places like Russia or China. It’s still something that needs to be worked through the French political system, but it’s still scary that people think this is an option.

French president Emmanuel Macron claims that protesters are using Snapchat, TikTok, and Telegram to film violent events and organise illegal gatherings.
